Domes
Modern Receiver In The Ear (RITE) hearing aids place the hearing aid speaker closer to the ear drum than previous types. This makes the sounds you hear much clearer but also increases the exposure of the hearing aid 'receiver' or speaker to moisture and earwax both of which can cause damage.
The hearing aid dome fulfils more than one function. It is used to suspend the hearing aid speaker in the centre of the ear canal so sound can be directed towards the eardrum where it is needed and also keep it away from the harmful earwax. If you look closely at the end of the dome you will see that it has a series of very small holes in it.
This filter is the first level of defence to protect the speaker from earwax damage and as such must be cleaned daily but also changed periodically to ensure the maximum performance and longevity of your hearing instruments. The frequency of change is dependent on the amount of earwax and moisture that your ear produces and how well you clean and maintain your investment. Monthly is a good rule of thumb but those who produce more wax or moisture may need to change them more frequently.
Please be aware that frequent removal and replacement of the dome may cause it to stretch causing a poor fit. This may lead to the dome falling off in the ear. If this does happen please do not try and remove it yourself but seek professional medical help.
